Xi Calls on BRICS to Support Peace Efforts in Middle East
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping urges BRICS members to contribute to efforts aimed at restoring peace in the Middle East, warning that the continuing conflict is causing severe harm and does not benefit the wider international community.
"The situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region continues to evolve, the war there has caused serious losses to people across the region and does not serve the common interests of the international community," Xi said during the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi.
His remarks come as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues, with the fighting affecting civilian and military infrastructure in several parts of the Middle East and creating disruptions to global energy supplies.
Xi calls on BRICS members to "firmly stand on the right side of history," while saying China is prepared to cooperate with other members and play their "due role in achieving peace and tranquility in the Middle East and Gulf region."
The Chinese leader also encourages BRICS countries to take a leading role in fostering greater understanding between different civilizations and supporting improvements in global governance.
Xi describes the BRICS cooperation framework as the "world's most influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries."
