Anthrax Outbreak Kills Wildlife, Infects People in Zambia
(MENAFN) An anthrax outbreak in northern Zambia has resulted in the deaths of dozens of wild animals, including hippos, elephants, buffalo and a crocodile, while several people have contracted the disease after eating meat from infected wildlife carcasses.
Authorities report that the outbreak has affected the Munyamadzi Game Reserve and a nearby river area in Mpika district, Muchinga province. The infected individuals are receiving medical treatment as government agencies work together to contain the spread.
A multisectoral response team has been deployed to the affected areas to monitor the situation, assess risks and strengthen measures aimed at preventing further transmission.
"Hunting in the affected area should be temporarily suspended until surveillance establishes the disease situation and associated risks. Any unexplained animal deaths should immediately be reported to the relevant authorities," officials said.
Authorities are also increasing the presence of wildlife police and strengthening checkpoints around locations where animal carcasses have been found. The measures are intended to prevent the carcasses from being moved or consumed while improving the reporting of suspected cases.
The public is meanwhile being warned against eating meat from animals that die naturally or from unexplained causes. People are also urged to avoid direct contact with animal carcasses as efforts continue to contain the outbreak.
