Lebanese President Rejects New Israel Talks for Now
(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun says Beirut is not currently pursuing another round of negotiations with Israel, while reiterating demands for an Israeli withdrawal and the return of prisoners and displaced people.
“There are no new negotiations with Israel at present,” Aoun tells reporters during a visit to the southern city of Nabatieh, where he is accompanied by army commander Rodolphe Haykal and the heads of Lebanon's security agencies.
He stresses that Lebanon remains committed to securing an Israeli withdrawal, facilitating the return of prisoners and displaced residents, and beginning reconstruction efforts.
“The withdrawal, the return of prisoners and displaced people, and reconstruction are national principles that we pledge to implement,” he added in his comments.
The remarks come after plans for the next round of Israel-Lebanon discussions are postponed. The meeting had initially been scheduled to take place in Rome the following week.
Instead, Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors are expected to meet at the US State Department in Washington to review developments and discuss the continued implementation of the June framework agreement, according to reports.
Formal negotiations are expected to resume in Rome in October.
Lebanon and Israel begin direct negotiations through a US-sponsored meeting in Washington on April 14, marking the start of the current diplomatic process between the two sides.
