1 Dead, 86 Rescued as Indonesian Ferry Vanishes at Sea
(MENAFN) An Indonesian passenger ship carrying 243 people vanished in the Java Sea early Sunday, leaving one person dead, 86 rescued, and the fate of the rest still unknown, a broadcaster reported.
The Virgo Transport 8 was sailing from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, when contact with the vessel was lost at roughly 2 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (1800 GMT Saturday).
I Putu Sudayana, head of the Class A Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin, said his office was notified of the emergency two hours after contact was lost, prompting a joint search and rescue team to head to the scene immediately.
"The latest information received indicates that the ship is facing bad weather in the waters of the Java Sea, approximately 80 nautical miles (92 miles) from the Basirih SAR Dock, Banjarmasin," Sudayana said in a statement.
Among the 243 people aboard, 30 were crew members.
