Xi Jinping Joins BRICS Leaders in India
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in New Delhi on Saturday to take part in the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, making his first visit to India in seven years.
Xi travels with senior Chinese officials, including Cai Qi, director of the Communist Party of China General Office, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to reports.
His previous trip to India took place in 2019, before a prolonged military confrontation between Chinese and Indian forces along the disputed border in Ladakh. The standoff continued for more than four years and severely strained relations between the two countries, pushing bilateral ties to their lowest point in decades.
Relations have since shown signs of recovery. The two sides have gradually resumed high-level contact, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveling to China last year and both governments taking measures to rebuild diplomatic engagement.
Xi attends the two-day BRICS gathering at Modi's invitation, with the summit taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The Chinese leader is also expected to meet with Modi for bilateral discussions later Saturday evening.
The summit brings together heads of government from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Discussions are expected to focus on international trade, economic partnerships and major regional and global developments.
Several other prominent leaders have also arrived in India for the meeting, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
