Iran Claims U.S. Launched Strike on Vessel Near Qeshm Island

(MENAFN) One person is dead and three more wounded after a strike hit an Iranian commercial vessel in the Gulf near Qeshm Island early Sunday, a local official said, as Tehran pinned blame squarely on Washington.

Iran's state broadcaster, quoted Qeshm Governor Amir Teymouri as calling the incident a "US attack" carried out by the "US terrorist enemy."

According to Teymouri, the vessel came under fire around 5 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) near Hengam Island and the Shib Deraz coastline of Qeshm Island. Authorities have not yet released further details on the identity of the vessel or the exact circumstances surrounding the strike.

In a separate development, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported Sunday that a vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified munition. No casualties or damage have been confirmed in that incident so far.
