Trump: Iran War Could Wind Down 'Very Soon'
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump predicted Saturday that the conflict with Iran could wind down imminently, accusing Tehran of dragging out hostilities in a bid to sway upcoming elections.
Speaking after talks with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin in Ireland, Trump said he expects the war to conclude soon while insisting Iran must never be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon. Asked directly when the fighting would stop, he said, "I think very soon," adding, "I think it'll be probably right after election times."
Trump accused Tehran of trying to "hold out as long as they can to complicate the election," while stressing Washington would not budge on nuclear weapons. "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. It's very simple," he said, predicting oil prices would drop sharply once the war ends.
He also touched on rising tensions in the Red Sea, saying Yemen's Houthi rebels had reached out to the US and signaled they had no interest in a fight with Washington. "They don't want to fight with us," Trump said, noting the group was letting the bulk of shipping traffic move through the waterway unimpeded.
Trump claimed the US has effectively locked down the region through an aggressive naval blockade, intercepting roughly 25 boats a day — "most of them at night." He said his administration had anticipated the conflict would push oil prices higher but expects a decline once the war with Iran is resolved.
Turning to Gaza, Trump pushed back on accusations that his administration was enabling genocide or Israeli occupation of the West Bank, pointing instead to what he described as Washington's role in halting the fighting and securing the return of hostages, telling reporters the US "put out the fire and we get all the hostages."
