Pezeshkian Urges BRICS to Defy Sanctions, Build Permanent Secretariat
(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on BRICS member states Saturday to push back against unilateral sanctions and set up a permanent secretariat to sharpen the bloc's operational muscle, addressing leaders at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Pezeshkian framed the moves as essential to speeding up how the bloc turns decisions into action, telling the summit that boosting efficiency means confronting outside sanctions pressure, shifting internal rivalries toward cooperation, and formalizing a standing secretariat — remarks relayed by Iran's semi-official news agency.
The Iranian leader laid out three priorities he said Tehran wants BRICS to pursue: deeper political coordination grounded in the UN Charter and respect for national sovereignty; economic and financial cooperation that breaks free of what he termed "monopolistic instruments"; and expanded collaboration on science, technology, energy and food security aimed at benefiting the Global South.
Turning to the Palestinian issue, Pezeshkian said delivering on Palestinian self-determination amounts to "a serious test of the credibility and legitimacy of global governance." He added, "Any just solution requires respect for the will of the Palestinian people," and argued that the bloc has a duty to act — casting BRICS as a champion of justice that must take a bigger hand in ending the occupation and securing Palestinians' legitimate rights.
