Russia Demands Answers After Citizen's Arrest in Romania
(MENAFN) The Russian Embassy in Romania said Thursday it was formally notified by the Romanian State Prosecutor's Office of the detention of a Russian national living in the country under a residence permit. The man was arrested Tuesday and held for 30 days on suspicion of "attempting to commit sabotage" on Romanian soil.
According to the embassy, Romanian media reports — citing the Romanian State Security Service and other law enforcement bodies — allege the man photographed and filmed sensitive sites to gather military intelligence in preparation for sabotage.
"According to reports that appeared in the Romanian media, citing the Romanian State Security Service and other law enforcement agencies, the Russian is accused of collecting military information through photography and video recording of sensitive facilities in order to organize acts of sabotage and subversion," the embassy said.
It dismissed the allegations as unfounded, calling the published material a mix of "assumptions, speculation, and various kinds of fantasy."
"They contain no concrete data confirming the unlawful nature of our citizen's activities or the involvement of Russian state bodies in them. One gets the impression that our compatriot has become the victim of yet another provocation aimed at stirring up anti-Russian sentiment in Romanian society," the statement continued.
Diplomats say they are tracking the case closely and stand ready to offer consular and legal help. "A request has been sent to the Romanian authorities for a meeting with him," the embassy said.
It went further, framing the arrest as part of a broader pattern: "is yet another confirmation that today Russian citizens cannot feel safe, even when they are legally present on the territory of EU countries," and warned that "At any moment, they risk becoming victims of unfounded persecution and provocations by Western intelligence services."
