Moscow Ties Israeli Officials' Annexation Threats to Election Push
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that escalating threats from senior Israeli officials — including talk of eliminating Palestinian Authority leadership and annexing Palestinian land — are being driven by Israel's approaching parliamentary vote.
"We link the recent toughening of rhetoric by senior Israeli officials to the accelerating electoral campaign ahead of the parliamentary elections in Israel scheduled for October 27," she said. "However, we believe that the fight for voters' votes cannot serve as justification for provocative statements that further inflame the atmosphere of mutual hostility and intolerance between Palestinians and Israelis."
Zakharova said Moscow backs efforts to restart direct dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians and views a comprehensive, internationally grounded settlement as the only route to durable peace in the region.
"We consistently advocate for the promotion of constructive approaches aimed at creating the necessary conditions for the resumption of direct Palestinian-Israeli dialogue on all disputed issues," she stressed.
Any lasting settlement, she added, must include an independent, viable and geographically contiguous Palestinian state coexisting peacefully alongside Israel.
Her remarks follow renewed calls from members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to harden policy toward the Palestinians ahead of the election.
