Trump: US Holding Back "Full" Iran Strikes Over Midterms
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump said Thursday the United States has stopped short of striking Iran "in full" because of the November 3 midterm elections, predicting the conflict would wind down shortly after voters go to the polls — or possibly even sooner.
Pressed in a Fox News interview on calls to escalate against Iran, Trump pointed to the election calendar. "Well, maybe I don't do that because of the election," he said, reiterating his belief the war would end shortly after the vote while leaving open the chance it ends beforehand. "They're limping along. They're in deep trouble," he said of Iran.
Asked how Iran is still firing missiles despite US strikes, Trump said the country's stockpile, while depleted, hasn't vanished entirely. "They had plenty, and they have some. They've been largely wiped out ... But they have missiles. They'll always have some missiles," he said.
Trump said he has no regrets over his handling of the conflict, rejecting the very concept. "If I had to do it again, I would do exactly as I did," he said, defending the decision to strike Iran's nuclear program on the grounds that Tehran would have used it. "They're crazy ... They would have wiped out Israel. They would have wiped out the Middle East and they would have started hitting a couple of our cities," he said. "If Iran had a nuclear weapon, we'd be calling up and saying, 'Sir, could we get together possibly?' We'd be dealing with them much differently," he added.
Later Thursday, returning from the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump dismissed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting the Iran war could stretch to the end of his term. "It's one of the most inaccurate papers I've ever read ... There's not even a chance," he told reporters.
On rising oil prices, Trump predicted a swift reversal once the conflict concludes. "When that ends, and I think it'll end very shortly after the election. (It) could end before the election, but I think it'll end very shortly after the election," he said.
