Shelton Makes History, Books First Grand Slam Final at US Open
(MENAFN) Ben Shelton punched his ticket to a maiden Grand Slam final Friday, outlasting fellow American Frances Tiafoe in a four-set battle at the US Open.
The eighth seed prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 and now meets top seed Alexander Zverev in Sunday's championship match. At 23, Shelton becomes the first Black American man to reach a US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, and the first American man to reach any Grand Slam final since MaliVai Washington at Wimbledon in 1996. He's also chasing a title no American man has claimed since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.
"I'm going for it here, and I'm going to leave it all on the court," said Shelton. "I hope you guys come and back me. Let's do it for the USA."
Shelton shook off a first-set loss and leaned on a dominant serve to seize control, finishing with 20 aces and breaking Tiafoe late in a lengthy third-set game. Tiafoe, playing in his third US Open semifinal, couldn't force a fifth set.
Earlier, Zverev downed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) to reach the final. The German owns a 5-0 career record against Shelton and has taken their last 10 sets — though Sunday will mark their first-ever Grand Slam meeting.
