Yemeni Army Reports Downing Five Houthi Drones in Al-Jawf
(MENAFN) Yemen’s army said Friday that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed five drones operated by the Houthi group in the northern province of Al-Jawf.
In a statement, the army said “air defenses shot down five suicide drones” belonging to the Houthis in an area east of Al-Hazm, the provincial capital.
No additional information was provided about the operation, while the Houthis had not immediately issued a response to the claim.
Yemen experienced a period of relative calm beginning in April 2022, following years of fighting between government forces supported by a Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthis, who took control of Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014.
The conflict has remained relatively restrained in recent years, but regional tensions have increased since late 2023 following the outbreak of the Gaza war. The Houthis have since carried out attacks targeting Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, while renewed clashes inside Yemen have fueled concerns that the country could again descend into a broader conflict.
