Iraq Seizes Cache of 47 Drones, 46 Projectiles in Anbar
(MENAFN) Iraqi security forces uncovered a hidden weapons stash in the western province of Anbar, seizing 47 drones and 46 projectiles, the Interior Ministry announced Friday via Facebook. Provincial police units acting on intelligence tips found the materials at an abandoned site previously used as a vehicle tire repair shop.
Alongside the drones and projectiles designed for attachment to them, searchers recovered control devices, batteries and related equipment, the ministry said. The site has since been secured and all seized items placed in safe storage. Authorities have opened an inquiry to trace the origin of the materials and identify any parties connected to them, with legal action to follow.
The seizure comes as Iraq pushes to consolidate weapons under exclusive state authority. In June, army spokesman Sabah al-Numan announced a new committee tasked with bringing all arms under government control, following a separate declaration of support from the Shiite-aligned Coordination Framework bloc. Unregulated weapons — held by armed factions including some under the Popular Mobilization Forces umbrella and others operating independently — remain a persistent flashpoint in Iraq's security and political landscape, with segments of the public urging a stronger official security apparatus amid ongoing unrest.
