Indonesia Shuts Mount Bromo Access Points After Savanna Fire
(MENAFN) Authorities in East Java closed several tourist entry points to Indonesia's Mount Bromo area after flames broke out in the Pengol Savanna on Thursday, a state-run news agency reported Friday. The shutdown will remain in place indefinitely while officials evaluate site safety, according to Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, head of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS).
Visitors can still enter via the Cemorolawang and Wonokitri routes, though access is now limited to the Sea of Sand, while the Lembah Watangan Savanna stays off-limits. The park's normal capacity tops out at 2,752 visitors.
Separately, crews are still battling a blaze that has scorched 72 hectares of East Java's Meru Betiri National Park since Tuesday. Edy Budi Susilo, chief of the Jember Regional Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BPBD), said Friday the fire remains active, with high winds hindering containment efforts and pushing flames within roughly 100 meters of nearby homes.
Smoke has triggered respiratory and eye irritation among residents, prompting a mask distribution effort. Although firefighters knocked the blaze down Thursday night, fresh hotspots have since flared in the forest's eastern section.
