US Democrats Press House Speaker to Delay Recess Over AI Risks
(MENAFN) Several Democratic lawmakers in the US House are calling on Speaker Mike Johnson to postpone an upcoming congressional recess and keep legislators in Washington until measures addressing artificial intelligence safety concerns are advanced.
A letter led by California Rep. Sam Liccardo and supported by Reps. George Whitesides, Lori Trahan and Ted Lieu urges the House to return immediately and remain in session until bipartisan safeguards for AI move forward, according to reports.
The lawmakers pointed to warnings from current and former researchers associated with AI company Anthropic, who have raised concerns that increasingly advanced artificial intelligence could represent an existential danger to humanity within the coming decade.
The House is due to reconvene Monday but is expected to leave Washington after one week before beginning a recess that will last until Nov. 9.
The letter points to several bipartisan initiatives, including the AI Kill Switch Act, which would preserve human authority to slow or shut down artificial intelligence systems. It also supports the FRONTIER Act, which would create a nationwide regulatory structure for AI.
Johnson is expected to oversee a vote next week on legislation focused on the energy expenses associated with data centers. However, he has not signaled plans to pursue wider AI regulation before Nov. 3, when the closely watched US midterm elections are scheduled, with numerous House and Senate seats at stake.
