Trump Defends US AI Strategy, Backs Anthropic Blacklisting
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump defended his administration’s strategy for regulating artificial intelligence, saying the US has safeguards in place while maintaining that China relies heavily on its leadership to control the technology.
In an interview published Friday, Trump cited Anthropic as an example of his administration’s approach when asked how Washington could maintain its advantage over China while addressing public concerns surrounding AI data centers.
"They did something that was very bad. Three months ago. And we shut them down. We shut them down fast.”
The Trump administration previously designated Anthropic as a security threat and prohibited the company from working with the US government. A federal judge ruled late last month that the decision was unlawful.
Trump also emphasized the role of human expertise in controlling AI, saying, "We have guardrails. The biggest guardrails are having people that are just as smart because nobody understands it except you have to be extremely high IQ.”
Discussing China’s approach, he said, "China doesn't have guardrails, by the way … President Xi is the guardrail. I mean, you can do anything in China."
Trump maintained that the US remains ahead in the global AI competition, stating that America is "competing with China. As you know, we are winning. You know we are winning against China with respect to AI."
He portrayed artificial intelligence as a transformative technology with an impact potentially exceeding previous technological breakthroughs, describing it as "bigger than the internet" and "probably" bigger than the Industrial Revolution.
"It could be, and we'll know in about a year, it could be the biggest thing of all. And it's mostly for the good."
