Chinese Satellite Imagery Linked to Deadly Iranian Strike on US Troops
(MENAFN) US officials have traced high-resolution satellite images used in an Iranian missile strike that killed three American soldiers in Jordan to Chinese sources, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, marking what the paper called the starkest evidence yet that Chinese assistance to Iran has cost American lives.
Citing officials familiar with the matter, the Journal said Tehran acquired the imagery before and after the July 17 attack on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, where ballistic missiles struck a housing area, killing three US troops and injuring four more.
Washington has stopped short of accusing Beijing directly, and the identities of the Chinese suppliers remain undisclosed. Senior US officials raised the issue with Chinese counterparts, who denied wrongdoing and demanded proof, according to the report; China's Foreign Ministry accused unnamed actors of trying to drag it into the conflict.
The disclosure lands weeks before Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are set to meet on Sept. 24, and the Journal said the administration has tried to avoid friction with Beijing that could derail the summit.
