Trump: Anthropic Shutdown Proves US Has AI 'Guardrails'

(MENAFN) President Trump defended his administration's light-touch approach to artificial intelligence regulation in an interview published Friday by Fox News, arguing that America already polices the technology while China's only real check is its president.

Asked how the US can win the AI race while easing public anxiety over data centers, Trump pointed to Anthropic, saying: "They did something that was very bad" and that the government "shut them down fast." Earlier this year the administration labeled Anthropic a security risk and blocked it from federal contracts; a judge ruled last month that the move was unlawful.

Trump argued the real safeguard is having people "just as smart" as the technology itself, since understanding it requires "extremely high IQ." Turning to Beijing, he said China lacks formal guardrails because "President Xi is the guardrail," adding that "you can do anything in China."

He insisted the US holds the lead, saying flatly "we are winning" the AI race against China. Trump cast the stakes in historic terms, calling AI "bigger than the internet" and possibly larger than the Industrial Revolution, predicting the full picture will emerge "in about a year" — and that its impact will be "mostly for the good."
