Xi in New Delhi for BRICS Summit, First India Visit in Seven Years
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in New Delhi on Saturday for the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, his first trip to India since 2019. He is traveling with senior Communist Party official Cai Qi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to a state news agency.
Xi's last visit came months before a four-year military standoff between Chinese and Indian forces in Ladakh that pushed bilateral relations to their lowest point in six decades. Ties have since warmed, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting China last year as both sides work to restore high-level contact.
At Modi's invitation, Xi will attend the two-day summit and hold bilateral talks with the Indian leader Saturday evening. The gathering draws leaders from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America to discuss global trade, economic cooperation and regional security. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders already in India for the summit.
BRICS now includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, along with partner nations Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Last year's summit was held in Rio de Janeiro; China will host in 2027.
