Walter De Maria Artworks Featured In Calvin Klein Runway Show
Curator Antwaun Sargent and Calvin Klein Creative Director Veronica Leoni collaborated to integrate De Maria's historical pieces into the fashion event. Sargent highlighted the artist's seminal influence on American Minimalism, stating,“When you think about American Minimalism, you have to think about Walter De Maria because of the ways in which he shaped American art through thinking about the essential qualities of material.”
The exhibition included several of De Maria's“Polygon” and“Meter Row” series, such as 13, 14, 15 Meter Rows from 1985, as well as 14-Sided Open Polygon and 16-Sided Open Polygon, both from 1984. Also on view was Truth/Beauty, a series of sculptures that the artist began developing before his death in 2013 and was partially realized. Sargent emphasized the shared“reverence for material” between De Maria and Calvin Klein, whether in stainless steel or cotton, and their capacity to evoke strong responses through minimalist forms.
Sargent explained Leoni's attraction to De Maria's work, suggesting it resonated with“the values central to De Maria's art, precision and repetition and form.” He noted that this aligns with Leoni's approach to re-envisioning Calvin Klein by drawing on the brand's foundational minimalist DNA. The installations were strategically placed to ensure the art held a central role in the viewing experience. Sargent described the approach, stating:“The work is, in a lot of ways, given pride of place. You cannot see the new fashion without seeing the art.”
This unique convergence brought together“three icons of New York,” according to Sargent: the historic Terminal Warehouse, the works of Walter De Maria, and the brand Calvin Klein.
