The Juan Santamaría International Airport has taken a decisive step toward service digitalization with the launch of its first four biometric gates (eGates), designed to automate and streamline passenger immigration control. This system aims to transform the travel experience in the face of the steady increase in tourist and domestic traffic passing through the country's main air terminal.

The technology allows passengers to complete their identity verification in seconds using biometric passports and facial recognition technology, significantly reducing wait times without compromising security protocols.

Key Highlights of the eGates System:
  • Initial Phase and Users: In this first stage, the automated gates are primarily enabled for adult Costa Rican citizens carrying a biometric passport, with plans to expand the service to other nationalities in the near future.
  • Investment and Strategic Partnership: The implementation is part of joint efforts between the airport operator (AERIS) and government authorities to modernize the country's technological infrastructure.
  • Accessibility and Supervision: The area features support stations and permanent supervision by Immigration officers, along with specific physical adaptations to ensure accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility.
  • Future Outlook: Following implementation in the arrivals area, airport management is already planning to introduce this technology to the international departures area, complementing previous tools such as self-service kiosks and Self Bag Drop systems.
