Zelensky: Sanctions Against Russia Must Be Imposed Now And They Must Be Strong

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this on Telegram, referring to his conversation with American journalist Fareed Zakaria during the 2026 Yalta European Strategy meeting, according to Ukrinform.

"Sanctions must be imposed now. Sanctions must be strong. This is a tool available to the United States to deprive Russia of the ability to finance the war against Ukraine every day. And, frankly, I sometimes do not understand why decisions cannot be made quickly. Because during a war, it is sometimes better to make a less-than-perfect decision than to do nothing," he said.

The head of state said decisions on sanctions, economic and energy restrictions against the Russian Federation, as well as restrictions on the production of ballistic missiles and relevant weapons, should be made immediately.

"What are we waiting for? Why do we all talk about sanctions only by commenting on whether the U.S. Congress will support Lindsey Graham's sanctions bill or not? Of course, it must be passed, with all due respect, first and foremost to Lindsey. He gave his life defending American, European and Ukrainian values. And this is a very important historical moment for the history of the United States of America. This bill must be passed, voted on and supported," Zelensky said.

He noted that strong decisions by the U.S. presidential administration and personal decisions by Trump were also important: "We very much want to hope for this."

As reported, a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia, which the U.S. Senate approved by an overwhelming majority last month, will be brought to a vote in the House of Representatives next week.
