Google Unveils 5 Clean Energy, Climate Initiatives In India Across Solar, Farming And AI
The initiatives will use artificial intelligence (AI), geospatial data and satellite technology to support India's clean energy transition and climate goals.
Rooftop Solar and Clean Energy
Google's Solar API will provide solar potential assessments for more than 300 million rooftops in India, helping installers reduce the time and cost of site surveys.
Google has also signed a long-term agreement with ReNew Power for a 150-MW solar project in Rajasthan. Its second Scope 3-focused solar project in India, the agreement takes the total capacity under such projects to 300 MW.
Climate-Smart Farming
Google and Mitti Labs will help tens of thousands of smallholder rice farmers in Telangana adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying to reduce methane emissions and conserve water. The project could mitigate nearly 3 million tonnes of CO2e on a 20-year basis.
Climate Technology and AI
The Google Center for Climate Technology has selected three initial projects focused on green workforce training and low-carbon construction materials. It has also added water stewardship and waste and circularity as new focus areas.
Google's DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet has selected four Indian startups - Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests and Climitra Carbon - working on climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, biodiversity and biochar.
