Michael Craig

Dr Michael Craig completed his PhD in Psychology at the University of Edinburgh in 2015, having been awarded an Alzheimer's Society PhD Scholarship to investigate the functioning of awake memory consolidation in individuals with and without Alzheimer's disease. He undertook postdoctoral and fellowship research at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, including an Alzheimer's Society Research Fellowship, before joining the School of Psychology at Northumbria University as Assistant Professor in Cognitive Psychology in 2020. Michael leads an undergraduate module in quantitative research methods and contributes to the supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students.
Michael leads the Memory Consolidation Lab at Northumbria University, where his research investigates the neurocognitive basis of memory in human health and disease, with a particular focus on the processes supporting awake consolidation of new memories. He applies a range of quantitative methods, including behavioural memory testing, electroencephalography (EEG) and physiological measurement, across healthy younger and older adults and individuals with Alzheimer's disease-related memory impairment. His work extends research on awake consolidation into applied and naturalistic settings, including how quiet rest in classroom environments supports children's learning and how factors such as exercise and neurodiverse traits (e.g., autism and ADHD) influence the strengthening of new memories.
Michael is also Associate Director of the Climate & Health Information Research Programme (CHIRP) at Northumbria University, an interdisciplinary network of over 100 researchers and stakeholders examining the origins, transmission and management of climate and health information and misinformation, including the identification of "information voids" during public health and climate-related events.
