Foreign Volunteers Most Often Choose Unmanned Systems Units Air Assault Officer
“Foreign cadets choose various military occupational specialties, but first and foremost, everyone is interested in unmanned systems,” Stadnichenko said.
According to him, foreign volunteers undergo training at the training center alongside Ukrainians. Everyone is trained in Ukrainian. When military units send foreign personnel to undergo BGMT, interpreters accompany them. Some understand Ukrainian, particularly those from Slavic countries. In addition, the instructors have a basic command of English, which also helps with communication.
Stadnichenko noted that many former service members from various countries come to the 199th Training Center for BGMT. In other words, these are people who have already served in the military and, to some extent, find it easier than Ukrainian conscripts who have never served.
“If we compare foreigners serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine with those fighting on the enemy's side, people who come to the Russian army from poor countries often have no military experience and do so for financial gain. By contrast, those who join us are people who have already tested themselves, for example, by completing Navy SEAL training (an elite U.S. Navy military unit – ed.). They arrive with basic training already under their belts,” the officer added.
The major also said that the level of training in the Air Assault Forces is quite high because Ukraine is engaged in active combat. The BGMT program is gradually being updated based on battlefield experience, making it more relevant than similar training abroad.
