Lithuanian FM: Europe Will Find Way To Use Russian Assets To Support Ukraine

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Kristupas Vaiteikūnas made this statement in an interview with Ukrinform.

He noted that member states continue to seek ways to use the frozen assets, and Lithuania supports this idea.

“We need to find a way to assure Belgium that this (the use of frozen Russian assets-ed.) is safe for them, because when you hold someone's assets, you are responsible for them-even when it comes to Russian property. I think this issue will remain on the negotiating table in Brussels, because one way or another, we'll need to find a way to support Ukraine in 2027 and beyond. The aggressor must pay,” said Vaiteikūnas.

The diplomat noted that the exact mechanism is still under discussion, but negotiators on the use of Russian assets are proposing, for example, to transfer them to the European Commission.

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukraine advocates revising the idea of using Russia's frozen assets.

On September 9, the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights called for the creation, under the auspices of the Council of Europe, of a mechanism that would allow Russia's frozen state assets to be used to pay compensation to Ukraine in accordance with rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.
