GAM, Jameel C40 Labs Launch Tactical Urbanism Project On Amman's Al-Taj Street

Amman, Sept. 10 (Petra) -- The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), in partnership with the Jameel C40 Urban Planning Climate Labs, launched a new tactical urbanism project on Al-Taj Street in Amman's Yarmouk district.

Sponsored by Ziad Al-Rihani, Deputy Chairman of the GAM Committee, deputizing for the committee chairman, the launch event was attended by George Richards, Director of Community Jameel organisation, along with municipal officials. The project introduces a human-centered tactical urban design intervention in a high-density area.

The intervention was executed along the corridor extending between Ibn Majid and Hala Bint Khuweilid schools on Al-Taj Street, a key thoroughfare serving students from four schools located on a median strip at a congested traffic intersection.

The Al-Taj Street pilot project forms part of the work of Jameel C40 Urban Planning Climate Labs, a partnership between C40 Cities and Community Jameel. The initiative works directly with GAM, Amman, and Chennai to align spatial master plans and land-use policies with climate goals, emissions reduction targets, and climate risk data to build sustainable urban environments.

The project aims to mitigate extreme heat impacts through rapid, low-cost urban interventions while creating inclusive public spaces for children, women, and the elderly to foster social interaction and provide a safer urban setting.

It also seeks to improve pedestrian safety in narrow corridors experiencing high traffic and foot density, incorporating natural shading and cooling solutions to reduce thermal stress during summer months.

Al-Rihani stated that the project translates urban planning principles into practical solutions, presenting a scalable model for other neighborhoods in Amman, particularly those vulnerable to climate impacts.

Richards highlighted that Jameel C40 Climate Labs helped align Amman's urban planning policies with climate risk data to create sustainable neighborhoods, while Mark Watts of C40 Cities noted that cost-effective interventions can transform unshaded public spaces into climate-resilient environments across the region.
