Maurizio Cattelan Features Human Remains Sculpture In Berlin Show

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Provocateur sculptor Maurizio Cattelan has opened a new exhibition,“NIGHT,” at Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie, featuring new works including one made with human ashes. Known for controversial pieces like a banana duct-taped to a wall, Cattelan's latest show in Berlin is described as a survey, though it adopts a distinctive format consistent with his artistic style.

Cattelan, who was born in Padua, Italy, and divides his time between New York and Milan, is this year's recipient of the Preis der Nationalgalerie. This award traditionally honors artists with ties to Berlin, making Cattelan an unusual choice. The Neue Nationalgalerie has sought to emphasize his connection to the German capital, noting his role as co-curator for the 2006 Berlin Biennale.

The exhibition, curated by Lisa Botti in collaboration with museum director Klaus Biesenbach and Cattelan himself, does not include his famous banana piece. However, it does feature other well-known works, such as Him ( 2001 ), a sculpture depicting a kneeling Hitler that has previously generated controversy. New additions include a scaled-down replica of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and Dust ( 2026 ), a fire extinguisher filled with human remains. Cattelan conceived the exhibition as a space for worship, according to a statement.
