Ferry Fire Kills Five, Leaves Dozens Missing Off Philippine Coast
(MENAFN) At least five people have died, and 87 others remain unaccounted for after a passenger ferry caught fire off Palawan province in the western Philippines, according to authorities.
The MV June Aster was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the fire broke out Wednesday in waters near Coron, Palawan, according to reports.
Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said 42 people were rescued following the incident, while search and rescue teams continue efforts to locate those still missing.
Emergency response units were mobilized after authorities received reports of a fire aboard the vessel approximately 1.2 nautical miles (2.2 kilometers) northeast of Barangay Marcilla in Coron.
Investigators are now working to establish what caused the blaze as rescue operations continue in the area.
