Switzerland Records Unprecedented Summer Heat
(MENAFN) Switzerland endured its warmest summer since nationwide temperature measurements began, with the countrywide average reaching 17.2C (63F), according to meteorological authorities.
The June-to-August period surpassed the previous summer record from 2003 by 0.4C (0.7F). Temperatures were also 3.4C (6.1F) above the 1991-2020 reference average, highlighting the exceptional intensity of the heat.
The northwestern part of the country experienced an even stronger deviation, recording average temperatures 4C (7.2F) above the reference period.
On July 30, the Basel-Binningen weather station measured 39.7C (103.5F), matching the highest temperature ever recorded north of the Alps. That record had previously been set at Geneva-Cointrin on July 7, 2015.
Thirty monitoring stations registered new summer temperature records, with almost half of those records being reached during June.
The prolonged heat also led to a significant increase in hot days and tropical nights. Several stations experienced almost two additional weeks of hot days compared with their previous records, while Neuchatel and Glarus each recorded 18 more hot days.
Across Switzerland, 50 tropical nights were recorded during the summer, meaning nighttime temperatures remained at or above 20C (68F). This was eight more than the number recorded during the previous record-setting summer of 2003.
