Israeli Forces Shell Syrian Village Amid Rising Quneitra Incursions
(MENAFN) Israeli forces fired artillery shells toward the outskirts of Tarnaja village in Syria’s southwestern Quneitra governorate on Wednesday, according to reports.
The shelling targeted the village with artillery fire, while no immediate information was available regarding casualties or material damage.
The latest attack followed an Israeli military incursion into the Quneitra countryside a day earlier, when troops entered Bariqa village, raided a residence and carried out searches.
Israeli incursions and attacks have become increasingly frequent across Quneitra in recent days. On Sunday, Israeli forces fired an artillery shell near Samadaniyah village, while six shells were launched toward the outskirts of Rafid a day earlier.
Five Israeli military vehicles also moved into the vicinity of Rafid before withdrawing without making any arrests.
Southern Syrian areas, particularly Quneitra and Daraa, have experienced almost daily Israeli military activity involving raids, searches, arrests and the establishment of checkpoints.
Israel has controlled most of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement no longer effective and moved into the Syrian buffer zone and other strategic locations, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said on July 26 that Damascus was working with the involvement of several countries to reach a security arrangement with Israel.
He said such an agreement would “pave the way for comprehensive peace without relinquishing Syria’s right to the occupied Golan.”
