Syria Condemns Netanyahu Visit to Occupied Territory
(MENAFN) Syria has denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to occupied Syrian territory, describing his presence there as a “provocative” breach of Syrian sovereignty and international law.
Netanyahu traveled to the Israeli-held section of Mount Hermon on Wednesday, accompanied by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as Netanyahu’s “illegal entry,” arguing that the visit represented a “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Damascus warned that repeated Israeli military incursions and attacks inside Syrian territory were fueling a dangerous escalation that could further undermine regional security and stability.
The Syrian government said Israel would bear responsibility for the consequences of its actions, while urging the UN, international organizations and major influential countries to intervene and stop the attacks. It also called for implementation of the 1974 disengagement agreement.
During his visit, Netanyahu said Israel had achieved unprecedented “absolute control” over the territory extending from Mount Hermon toward the Yarmouk River.
He further stated that Israel would prevent what he called “terrorist forces” from establishing positions close to its borders.
Katz indicated that Israeli forces planned to remain in the occupied area, declaring: “We are here on Mount Hermon, and we will not move from here,” in a separate video.
Israel seized Syria’s Golan Heights in 1967 before formally annexing the territory in 1981. The annexation has not been recognized by the international community.
Israeli forces have additionally moved to expand their presence within Syrian territory amid recent developments across the region.
