Kuwait Condemns Israeli Move in Syrian Mount Hermon
(MENAFN) Kuwait on Thursday denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s entry into Syria’s Mount Hermon, urging the UN Security Council to intervene against actions it said violate Syria’s sovereignty.
Netanyahu visited the occupied Syrian section of Mount Hermon on Wednesday alongside Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. The visit has been viewed by observers as potentially linked to Netanyahu’s political campaign ahead of the Knesset elections scheduled for Oct. 27.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry described Netanyahu’s “illegal entry” into Syrian territory as a “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a “blatant breach” of international law.
The ministry warned that Israel’s repeated incursions and military actions inside Syria were contributing to an “escalation that undermined security and stability in the region.”
Kuwait also reiterated its “full support” for Syria’s independence and its sovereignty over its entire territory.
The ministry called on the UN Security Council to meet its obligations by working to end the attacks and ensuring Israel adheres to applicable international resolutions. It also stressed the importance of honoring the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement of Forces between Syria and Israel.
Syria separately condemned Netanyahu’s “illegal entry” on Wednesday, calling the visit “provocative” and saying it violated the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
Jordan likewise described the move as a “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a “blatant breach” of international law.
During a video-recorded visit, Netanyahu appeared wearing a bulletproof vest while standing on Mount Hermon ahead of the Jewish New Year. He pointed toward Damascus, Lebanon and the Syrian Golan Heights while describing Israel’s position in the area.
Netanyahu said Israel had achieved unprecedented “absolute control” across the territory extending from Mount Hermon toward the Yarmouk River.
He also stated that Israel would prevent “terrorist forces” from establishing positions close to its borders.
Katz separately indicated that Israel intended to retain its presence on the mountain, saying: “We are here on Mount Hermon, and we will not move from here,”
Israel has controlled Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967 and formally annexed the territory in 1981. The annexation has not been recognized by the international community.
