Türkiye Strengthens AI Ambitions Through Investment, Innovation
(MENAFN) Türkiye is stepping up efforts to establish itself as a major global player in artificial intelligence by expanding investment, supporting technology ventures, and implementing a new national strategy, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir said Thursday.
Speaking during the GITEX Ai Türkiye event, Kacir said the government is developing broad-based measures designed to strengthen the country's technology and innovation ecosystem.
The international gathering began Wednesday at the Istanbul Expo Center under the organization of Türkiye's Presidency Investment Office and the Industry and Technology Ministry, bringing together startups, investors, and major technology companies seeking new business opportunities and partnerships.
Türkiye has significantly expanded its research and innovation infrastructure, with around 1,700 research and development centers and more than 13,000 companies operating across 115 technoparks, according to the minister.
Kacir also pointed to the country's growing electric vehicle industry, highlighting the national Togg brand and noting that almost 120,000 vehicles are now being driven across Türkiye.
Government-backed investment mechanisms have also helped channel approximately $2.8 billion into the startup sector. A newly announced $300 million government commitment to venture capital funds is expected to generate more than $750 million in additional financing for the ecosystem.
Türkiye currently has eight unicorn companies, known domestically as Turcorns, while authorities are targeting the creation of 100,000 technology startups as part of their broader ambitions for the country's digital economy.
Plans are also underway to convert the former terminal at Istanbul Ataturk Airport into what the government describes as the world's largest startup hub. The project is intended to further establish Istanbul as a prominent international technology destination.
With artificial intelligence becoming increasingly central to economic development, the government is directing $150 million in public resources toward venture capital funds specializing in AI.
Authorities have additionally introduced the HIT-30 initiative, a $30 billion support program that includes a $1.6 billion funding call dedicated to artificial intelligence and efforts to accelerate digital transformation.
Under Türkiye's AI Action Plan for 2026-2030, at least 2% of public investment programs will be directed toward AI-related projects, reflecting the government's intention to make the technology a key component of future development.
The country also expects to significantly expand its digital infrastructure by 2030. Data center capacity is planned to reach one gigawatt, while private investment of at least $10 billion is expected to flow into cloud computing technologies and related digital infrastructure.
Kacir further announced that developers will soon gain access to the initial version of BILGE, Türkiye's homegrown large language model, marking another step in the country's drive to strengthen its domestic AI capabilities.
