Cargo Ship Fire Claims Lives, Leaves Crew Missing in Eastern China
(MENAFN) At least 20 people have died, and five others are still unaccounted for after a foreign-flagged cargo vessel caught fire at a shipyard in eastern China.
The incident occurred at around 11.15 a.m. (0315GMT) while the vessel was undergoing maintenance at Qingdao Beihai shipyard in Qingdao, Shandong province. A total of at least 42 people were on board when the blaze erupted.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for immediate measures following the incident, urging "efforts to prevent major accidents."
Xi also stressed the need to "expedite search and rescue of missing persons, properly handle the aftermath and provide comfort and support, and promptly investigate the cause of the accident, holding those responsible accountable according to law."
China's Emergency Management Ministry sent a specialized team to the scene as Shandong authorities mobilized personnel and resources for emergency operations and response efforts.
The president further instructed regional authorities and relevant government departments to "should learn profound lessons" from the incident and "thoroughly investigate and rectify all kinds of fire hazards."
