UK Green Party Unveils 5-Point Plan to Rein In AI, Big Tech
(MENAFN) The UK's Green Party has put forward a five-point plan aimed at curbing the influence of technology giants and tightening oversight of artificial intelligence, amid warnings that the technology could pose an existential risk to humanity, media reported Thursday.
Among the proposals: working alongside other nations to build a global body tasked with overseeing and regulating AI development, and enacting a legal ban on lethal autonomous weapons.
These weapons — capable of identifying and striking targets without human input — are not currently in the UK's arsenal, though the country's recent Defense Investment Plan committed £5 billion ($6.8 billion) toward drones and autonomous systems.
The Green Party's plan also pushes for public funding to be steered toward AI developed "for the public good," safeguards to keep key workplace decisions under human control, and investment in domestic AI infrastructure to cut reliance on US technology.
"Technologies with the power to reshape our lives must be subject to effective public oversight," said Green lawmaker Sian Berry. "Greens want strong regulation of AI, with clear safeguards against harmful uses and proper democratic accountability."
The party has not yet detailed how the proposals would be financed, saying further specifics will follow.
Dame Chi Onwurah, the Labour chair of Parliament's Science and Technology Committee, said regulation was needed "in the light of recent events," but dismissed the Greens'
announcement as "a hodge-podge of buzzwords and meaningless phrases."
The plan lands days after Evan Hubinger, a senior safety researcher at AI company Anthropic, warned he believes there is a greater than 10% chance AI could pose a species-ending risk within the next decade.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham also acknowledged "risks to national security" tied to AI during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.
Burnham said giving AI Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan a seat at the Cabinet table had "lifted the level of the conversation about artificial intelligence within government."
