Nearly 1,400 Yemeni Families Flee Homes in 24 Hours as Clashes Surge
(MENAFN) Almost 1,400 families were forced from their homes in western Yemen within a single 24-hour span, as fighting between government troops and Houthi forces intensified, officials reported Wednesday.
According to the government-run Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps, 1,367 families fled their homes on Sept. 8 across the provinces of Taiz, Al-Hudaydah, and Lahj. The figures were disclosed in a statement carried by the official news agency.
That single day's exodus pushed the cumulative total of displaced families across the three provinces to 6,145 since the start of September.
Officials pointed to escalating military confrontation and mounting fears for civilian safety as the driving forces behind the flight of residents.
The unit said its field teams remain engaged in registering newly displaced families, confirming their whereabouts, and evaluating their humanitarian needs — work being carried out in coordination with local authorities, relief organizations, and other partners.
It further urged humanitarian groups and donor nations to scale up assistance, cautioning that demand is rising for shelter, food, clean water, essential supplies, and medical care, with the potential for additional waves of displacement still looming.
The surge in displaced families follows weeks of intensifying combat between Yemeni government troops and Houthi fighters across multiple front lines — most notably in Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Al-Bayda — compounded by airstrikes striking Houthi-held positions.
Wednesday alone saw fresh clashes reported by both sides in Taiz, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale, and Al-Hudaydah. Meanwhile, forces aligned with the government dispatched reinforcements to Mocha, a strategically vital coastal city near the Bab al-Mandab Strait on Yemen's western shore.
The conflict has gripped Yemen since Houthi fighters captured the capital, Sanaa, along with multiple provinces in September 2014 — a takeover that triggered a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states to intervene militarily in March 2015, backing the internationally recognized government.
