14 Dead in Blast at Syrian Weapons Depot Near Sarmada
(MENAFN) An explosion at a temporary weapons and war-remnants storage site near Sarmada in northern Syria's Idlib province killed 14 people and injured more than 10 others Wednesday, according to the Defense Ministry.
The ministry said all of those killed were its own personnel, while the injured included civilians. In a statement, it confirmed the blast occurred at a temporary facility used to store weapons and remnants of war near Sarmada, adding that specialized units moved immediately, in coordination with local authorities, to secure the site and manage the aftermath.
An investigation is now underway to determine what caused the explosion and the circumstances surrounding it, the ministry said. It took full responsibility for the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
A Syrian news agency had earlier reported a preliminary toll of four dead and 10 injured. Subhi Assaf, director of the media office at the Idlib Health Directorate, confirmed that initial death toll and said the injuries ranged from minor to moderate. He added that rescue teams were still searching the rubble for anyone missing.
A Syrian state broadcaster reported that internal security forces had sealed off roads leading to the site "to ensure the safety of civilians." Civil defense and firefighting crews, it added, were working to put out a fire sparked by the explosion.
Sarmada, located in northern Idlib province, ranks among the area's major population and commercial hubs.
