Tanker Struck Near Iraq's Al-Faw as Gulf Tensions Boil Over
(MENAFN) An unidentified projectile slammed into a tanker southeast of Iraq's Al-Faw town Wednesday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported.
According to the advisory, the incident was reported 28 nautical miles (52 kilometers/32 miles) southeast of Al-Faw, with the tanker's master confirming his vessel had been hit by an unknown projectile. The crew escaped unharmed, and no environmental damage was reported.
Officials are now investigating, and UKMTO has urged ships in the area to proceed with caution and flag any suspicious activity they encounter.
In a second advisory issued the same day, UKMTO flagged a separate incident involving multiple merchant vessels in the northern Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, which it said came under "disabling fire" tied to ongoing military activity in the region. The agency said it could not yet confirm whether there were casualties or environmental fallout.
Both incidents unfolded against a backdrop of surging maritime tensions fueled by the broader US-Iran conflict, with attacks mounting against both military and commercial shipping across regional waters.
