Merz-Trump Call Postponed as US-Germany Tensions Flare
(MENAFN) A scheduled phone call between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and US President Donald Trump has been called off, a German government spokesman confirmed Wednesday, offering no explanation for the delay.
"The chancellor's schedule had included a telephone call with President Trump for today; however, the German side has postponed this call," government spokesman Stefan Kornelius told reporters at a Berlin press briefing.
"A new date has not yet been set," he added, refusing to elaborate on what prompted the postponement.
The cancellation surfaces against a backdrop of deepening friction between Washington and Berlin. The Trump administration has taken aim at Germany's migration policies in recent public statements, while simultaneously throwing its support behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which claimed victory in Sunday's state election in Saxony-Anhalt.
Trump himself celebrated that outcome Tuesday in a post on his Truth Social platform. "Wow! The Populist Party in Germany just had a really big night," he wrote.
He continued, "They finally got tired of the absolutely horrible Immigration rules and regulations which have hurt Germany so badly. THEY ARE ON THE RISE, and not going to take it anymore! MGGA!!!" — using his own shorthand for "Make Germany Great Again."
