Doha, Qatar – September 10, 2026: Formula 1 heads to a new stage this weekend as Madrid hosts its first Spanish Grand Prix at the newly built Madring circuit from September 11-13, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli arriving after a remarkable home victory at Monza.
Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix in 60 years, charging from 19th on the grid to take victory ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The race was interrupted by an early red flag following Charles Leclerc’s crash, while a mid-race Virtual Safety Car later allowed Antonelli to switch to fresh medium tyres as Russell remained on used hards. Antonelli went on to pass his teammate with four laps remaining and secure victory.
The result extended Antonelli’s Drivers’ Championship lead to 66 points, with the Italian now on 267 points and Russell second on 201. Lewis Hamilton sits third for Ferrari on 191 points, followed by Lando Norris on 171 after finishing fourth at Monza.
The focus now shifts to Round 14 of the championship and a completely different challenge in Madrid. Madring makes its Formula 1 debut this weekend, bringing Grand Prix racing back to the Spanish capital for the first time in 45 years. Madrid last hosted a Formula 1 World Championship race at the Circuito del Jarama in 1981.
For Madrid-born Carlos Sainz, the weekend carries added significance. The Williams driver is an ambassador for the new event and will race in front of his home crowd as Formula 1 begins a new chapter in the Spanish capital.
What to Expect at Madring
The new Madring circuit combines public roads with purpose-built sections around the IFEMA Madrid exhibition centre and Valdebebas. Its 22-turn layout features high-speed sections, tight corners, significant elevation changes and heavy-braking zones, with cars expected to reach speeds of around 340 km/h.
One of the circuit’s defining features is Turn 12, known as La Monumental, a sweeping banked corner approximately 550 metres long with an incline of up to 24%. Drivers are expected to spend around six seconds navigating the corner, while surrounding grandstands will accommodate up to 45,000 spectators.
As no Formula 1 race has previously taken place at Madring, teams enter the weekend without competitive data from the circuit. Three practice sessions will give drivers and engineers their first opportunity to understand how the new track behaves under Grand Prix conditions before Qualifying on Saturday.
