GCC Chief Praises 12-Nation Push to Curb Trade With Israeli Settlements
(MENAFN) Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi welcomed a move by 12 countries to curb trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling it a significant step in the international response to settlement expansion.
In a statement, Al-Budaiwi praised the joint position adopted by the foreign ministers of the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
He said the shift from merely condemning settlement activity to enacting concrete measures against it would bolster international efforts to safeguard Palestinian rights and preserve the path toward an independent Palestinian state.
Al-Budaiwi reaffirmed the GCC's backing of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people's right to statehood along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international resolutions.
The 12 nations announced Tuesday that they intend to introduce national restrictions on trade in goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements, and/or push for supporting measures at the European level toward that goal.
They also voiced concern over worsening conditions in the occupied West Bank, citing settlement expansion and violence carried out by Israeli occupiers, and voiced opposition to annexation and the forced displacement of Palestinians.
Israeli settlement construction has accelerated across the occupied West Bank in recent years, accompanied by a rise in attacks by Israeli occupiers against Palestinians.
The UN regards Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories as illegal under international law and has repeatedly cautioned that continued settlement growth jeopardizes the viability of a two-state solution.
