Norway Bids Farewell to King Harald V in State Funeral
(MENAFN) Norway laid King Harald V to rest Wednesday in a traditional state funeral, days after the monarch died on Aug. 28 at the age of 89.
Oslo's city center was secured, cordoned off and adorned for the occasion as a procession moved from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral before continuing to the Palace Church at Akershus Fortress, according to a broadcaster.
The procession bearing King Harald's coffin set off at noon from Castle Square, with members of the royal family following behind the late king en route to the church. Roughly 1,900 soldiers lined both sides of the route, forming a ceremonial guard, while the Norwegian Armed Forces estimated that approximately 3,500 military personnel were ceremonially represented across Oslo in total.
The funeral drew an array of European royalty, heads of state and government officials from multiple countries. Among the royal guests were Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Danish King Frederik X and Queen Mary, Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, and Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Britain's Prince William and Princess Anne were also in attendance.
The main service was held at Oslo Cathedral, which seats around 800 but can hold up to roughly 1,000 people.
Following the burial, the government invited members of the public to a memorial service at Oslo City Hall. At the same time, the royal family held a private memorial service at Akershus Castle Church, attended by royal guests and state representatives. A reception at the Palace was also planned for the afternoon.
