Record Rainfall Injures 41, Paralyzes Japan’s Nagoya
(MENAFN) At least 41 people sustained minor injuries after record-breaking rainfall battered Nagoya in central Japan, prompting the city to roll out emergency relief measures Wednesday, according to local media reports.
A linear rainband tore through the Tokai region Tuesday, flooding roads and railway tracks and bringing transportation across Nagoya to a standstill, media reported.
By Tuesday evening, roughly 1,600 people had sought shelter at evacuation centers, while local authorities said at least 200 vehicles had been damaged by early Wednesday.
The relentless downpour left commuters and students stranded overnight as train and subway services ground to a halt.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest-level, Level 5 emergency flood warning Tuesday for the Shonai River, which runs through Aichi and neighboring Gifu prefecture, after water levels surged in the wake of the intense rainfall.
Media reported that rain clouds formed over the Tokai and Shikoku regions, unleashing extreme downpours in several areas.
The weather agency warned Wednesday that heavy rain could persist across large swaths of Japan through Thursday, as an active front stretches along the Pacific coast.
Forecasters project up to 200 millimeters (7.9 inches) of rain in the Tokai and Kinki regions over the 24 hours through Thursday morning, with 150 mm expected in Shikoku and as much as 120 mm forecast for the Kanto-Koshin area, including Tokyo.
Authorities cautioned that even modest additional rainfall could trigger landslides or flooding in areas where the ground is already saturated from the earlier storms.
