Drone Strike Kills 4, Injures 30 in Russia's Novorossiysk
(MENAFN) At least four people were killed and nearly 30 injured after Ukrainian drones struck the southern Russian port city of Novorossiysk overnight, regional officials said Wednesday.
Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported the toll in a statement posted to Telegram, saying: "Tragically, four people lost their lives, including one child… Another 29 people in the city were injured; three are in serious condition."
According to Kondratyev, Russian forces intercepted what he called a "massive" wave of drones targeting the Krasnodar region. He said all those wounded were receiving medical treatment.
The governor alleged the strikes deliberately targeted civilian sites, listing damage to three private homes, five apartment blocks, a church and a kindergarten. "Emergency and rescue services are continuing to work at the sites," he added.
Falling drone wreckage also struck three houses and a kindergarten in the nearby town of Anapa, though Kondratyev said no casualties were reported there. Cleanup efforts were also underway in the Krymsky and Temryuksky districts, he said.
Separately, Novorossiysk Mayor Andrey Kravchenko said debris had landed on commercial properties and near a residential building in the city, without specifying what type of business was affected.
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses downed 596 Ukrainian drones across 11 regions overnight, along with strikes over the Black Sea and Crimea — the peninsula Moscow seized in 2014.
Ukraine's General Staff, for its part, said it had struck the Novorossiysk naval base, sparking fires at the base and at the oil terminal of the city's seaport. Kyiv described the facility as an "important basing point for the ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, which is used for maintenance and logistical support of the ships of the Russian army."
The competing claims could not be independently verified, a persistent challenge amid the ongoing war.
The exchange reflects an intensifying pattern: both Russia and Ukraine have stepped up strikes on each other's logistics hubs, ports and energy infrastructure in recent months. Each side denies targeting civilians, insisting its strikes hit only military or military-linked facilities.
