Several US combat aircraft were damaged when Iranian ballistic missiles struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, with about eight F-15 fighters sustaining light damage and returning to service, according to people familiar with the damage assessment.

An A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft was hit severely and left with major wing damage, the assessment indicated. The extent of repairs required for that aircraft was not clear. US Central Command had not confirmed the aircraft losses or issued a detailed damage statement by Thursday.

Jordan's armed forces said 20 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran towards the kingdom during the attack. Air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed 18, while two fell in uninhabited areas. The military said there were no casualties, although its public account did not address damage inside the US-operated section of the air base.
