Ferry Fire Off Palawan Leaves 5 Dead, 87 Missing
(MENAFN) At least five people have died and 87 remain unaccounted for after a ferry caught fire off the coast of Palawan, a popular tourist province in the Philippines, a news agency reported Thursday, citing the local coast guard.
A Local outlet reported that the vessel, the MV June Aste, was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the fire broke out Wednesday.
Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said 42 people had been rescued so far, according to a statement posted on Facebook, adding that search and rescue efforts remain underway.
The Coast Guard dispatched response teams after receiving reports of a blaze aboard the vessel — referred to in the PCG's statement as the MV June Aster — in waters roughly 1.2 nautical miles (2.2 kilometers) northeast of Barangay Marcilla in Coron, Palawan.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, authorities said.
