Japan Deploys 10,000 Police for Asian Games Opening in Nagoya
(MENAFN) Japan will mobilize approximately 10,000 police officers to secure the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Nagoya next week, according to local media reports Thursday.
A news agency reported that the ceremony for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will take place Sept. 19 at an athletic stadium in the city, marking Japan's first time hosting the event since 1994. Competition will continue through Oct. 4.
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are expected to attend the opening ceremony, though Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is not slated to take part.
Roughly 3,100 of the deployed officers will come from specially dispatched squads drawn from police forces across the country, the National Police Agency said, noting that artificial intelligence will also be incorporated into security operations.
Under a recently enacted law imposing stricter rules on small drone flights, no-fly zones for unmanned aircraft will be established within about 1 kilometer of both the ceremony venue and the imperial couple's lodging. Officials confirmed this will be the first time the revised law has been applied to an event attended by the emperor.
North Korea and Iran are among the nations participating in the games.
