Iran Strikes Hit US Aircraft at Jordan Air Base, Media Reports
(MENAFN) Several US military aircraft were damaged when Iran carried out strikes overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, local time, against Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, media reported, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.
The sources said around eight F-15 fighter jets sustained minor damage but have since been restored to operational service. A separate aircraft — an A-10 Thunderbolt, widely nicknamed the Warthog — was also struck and reportedly lost a wing in the assault, the sources added.
No American casualties have been reported as a result of the strikes on the Jordanian base.
The incident followed a US operation Tuesday that struck five Iranian tankers, a move Washington described as retaliation for Iran's targeting of a US Navy vessel. In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had struck eight tankers, two warships, and the US base in Jordan.
According to a media report, US forces based in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles to intercept the incoming Iranian attacks.
The confrontation unfolds against a backdrop of mounting concern among US officials over a fast-depleting Patriot missile inventory and shrinking reserves of other precision-guided munitions.
